CD4001BEG4 is a logic device with CMOS circuit that is composed of four independent inverters. It is widely used to build logic gates and buffer amplifiers in medical, automotive and industrial equipment. Common applications include direct drive of LEDs, PWM dimming control, clock generators and astable multivibrators. It can also be used for high frequency clock divider, analog switches and low-power logic integrated circuits.
Working principle wise, CD4001BEG4 adopts complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology to provide high power efficiency and low power consumption. This is because the active elements of CMOS are the metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) which can turn off at high voltage. They are driven using the input signals and can achieve low-power operation within a wide operating temperature range.
CD4001BEG4 inverters are designed as two-input NAND gates which can be further extended to four-input logic circuit by using a series of NAND logic gates. The logic circuit can be built by connecting four inverters together. Each of the inverters has two inputs, A and B and an output Y. The output Y is high when either or both of the inputs A and B are low. Input signals can be supplied from an external source or from the output of another gate and applied to the inputs of a gate. When both inputs are high, the output will be low.
The power dissipation of CD4001BEG4 can be lower than that of most other logic devices, thus offering improved performance. On the other hand, residual current can be lower on output and input circuits due to the low VCEsat (collector-emitter saturation voltage) of the MOSFET. This results in more reliable logical operations and less power dissipation.
Besides these basic characteristics, CD4001BEG4 also provides power-saving capability with its Schmitt-Trigger logic. This is an enhancement of the standard logic operation that goes beyond simple high and low threshold. It allows the device to respond faster with storage and buffering of digital signals by using two different thresholds. This makes the load of the output transistors less, reducing the power consumption of the device.
