!Logic Counters, Dividers, and the CD4018BMTE4 provide useful capabilities for a variety of applications. The CD4018BMTE4 is a logic family of counters, dividers and prescalers, designed with CMOS logic technology which is economical and has high speed performance, combined with low power operation. The CD4018BMTE4 is ideal for applications where power savings and/or clock generation and/or dividing a high frequency clock are required.
The CD4018BMTE4 has a wide range of applications in many areas such as industrial, aviation, automotive, and consumer electronics. It can be used in a variety of systems, in communications, computing, control, and other areas. For example, it can be used in synchronization of transmission data for voice or video communications, multiplexers and demultiplexers for digital signal processing, and frequency and pulse-width modulation for motor control.
At its core, the CD4018BMTE4 is a four-bit synchronous divide-by-N counter, where N can range from two to sixteen. It is capable of counter direction control and can be used to count up or down, depending on the state of the pin DIRECTION. The counter has four individual parallel outputs, each of which is latched at any instant of time. These outputs are labeled Q0 to Q3, with Q0 being the “most significant” bit (MSB) and Q3 being the “least significant” bit (LSB). The counter also has two clock input pins, CLK and CLCKX, and two enable inputs, ENA and ENB.
At the beginning of a counter cycle, the CLK signal is asserted. This signal is passed through the logic element to the main counter cycle control. It is then used to control the counter direction, reading the DIRECTION pin (up or down), and increment or decrement the counter output. As the counter is incremented/decremented, the Q outputs change with each clock cycle. After a certain number of clock cycles, the counter resets itself, with the output returning to its original state. During this time, the ENA and ENB inputs can be used to enable or disable the counter respectively.
When the counter is enabled, the output is updated on each clock cycle. If the counter is forced to reset before the end of the cycle, the output is not be updated. The counter can be externally reset when needed, by applying a reset pulse to the RST input. Any input signal applied at this time will also be latched onto the output as soon as the clock signal becomes active.
In addition to its basic counter function, the CD4018BMTE4 can be used in more specialized ways. For example, it can be used to divide a high-frequency clock, with the counter value resetting every N clock cycles. This can be used in applications such as octal frequency division or low-power multiplexers. Additionally, the counter can be used to generate a cyclic code, used for clock synchronization when transmitting or receiving data.
