The CD40192BE is a four-bit synchronous decade counter integrated circuit (IC) with four cascadable decade counters. It also contains binary coded decimal (BCD) outputs, which are available at pins 2–13. It is fabricated using CMOS technology and can be used in a wide range of applications such as frequency division, pulse width control, time division multiplexing and events counting. It is available in a 16-pin plastic dual-in-line package (PDIP). This integrated circuit has a high speed operation, depending on the type of clock used which can range from 50 Hz to 3 MHz. It also has a low power dissipation of 0.4 mW/MHz at a supply voltage of 5 V.The CD40192BE is a synchronous counter, meaning that it operates synchronously with the signal from a clock signal. The clock signal is applied to the CLK input pins, which are then applied to the S-R (set-reset) inputs of the four sections. Each of the sections contains a divide-by-ten counter and the output of each counter is connected to the Carry Out of the next section. The output of the last section is connected to the Counter Out output pin, which is the output of the IC. The output is a four-bit binary number which is equivalent to a number between 0-9 and corresponds to the decade counter. When the Counter Out pin is high, it signifies that the decade counter has been reset, i.e., has reached 0. The reset input pin (RST) is used to reset the counter back to 0 after a certain count has been reached. When RST is low, the counter does not operate and cannot be reset.The S-R inputs of each section must be synchronised with the CLK input in order for correct operation. The CLK input is a rising edge logic input which will cause the S-R input of the first section to be triggered on the rising edge and the remaining sections will be triggered on the next rising edge. The output of the Counter Out pin can be used to drive devices such as decade decade alarms and decade multiplexers. The decade alarms can be used to generate an alarm when the decade count has been reached. The decade multiplexers can be used to select between several output signals depending on the decade count.The Counter Out can also be used in conjuction with other logic circuits such as D-type flip-flops to produce frequency division and event counting circuits for a wide range of applications. The D-type flop-flops can be used to store the count and display the count by toggling their output.
