CD4022BCN is a decade counter integrated circuit (IC) known as a ripple counter. Ripple counter is a type of asynchronous counter that utilizes "ripple" logic where there are frequency division and division of a number without any external input from the clock signals. Since it is an asynchronous logic circuit, the output can be triggered in different orders as per the input data. The circuit is composed of 10 individually independent flip-flops which are connected together in a cascade. With this type of configuration, each output gives two active states, (Q) and (Q\'). The CD4022BCN is a dual 4-level binary ripple up-down counter registered with 10-bits of data. It is designed to make sequencing, counting and other related tasks convenient with the help of its 4-bit input/output ports. It consists of a decade counter and a 4-bit binary counter and each section can be accessed independently or can also be linked together. The CD4022BCN is a dual 4-level binary ripple up/down counter registered with 10 bits of data. This device is composed of 8 individually independent flip-flops which are connected together in a cascade. The output of each flip-flop can be used to trigger another device or can also be used as a clock in itself. The 4-bit input/output ports are used to control the operations of the circuit. With the help of its 4-bit input/output ports, it can detect counting edges up and down as well as count in binary, BCD or Gray codes.The CD4022BCN common applications include:* Clock divider and frequency divider circuits * Decade counting circuits* Digital counters* Digital frequency detectors* Number generators* Digital and analogue mixing systems* Robotics control systemsThe CD4022BCN works on the principle of binary the combination of the 2 flipping stages for sequencing. It is dependent upon the ACTIVE-HIGH internal clock (CLK) input which is active always. When the clock input is in the low state, the outputs of flip-flops will remain same. When the clock input changes its level to high, all the flip-flops get connected and the output of the first flip-flop will change its state according to the actual data. With every rising edge of the clock, the output of the flip-flop changes and thus the count of the decade counter changes accordingly.Apart from this, the CD4022BCN has several other features like: Power-On reset output, synchronised parallel load and reset, inverting open-collector outputs, two-phase dual clock inputs, operating temperature range (-20oC to +70oC). These wide range of features make it an ideal choice for several applications. The CD4022BCN is mainly used as a frequency divider, a divide-by-ten or a dividing device to generate a lower frequency clock from a higher frequency clock. It is also utilized in a range of other applications like PWM circuits, pulse width modulation, rotary pulse counter, and flash counter.
