Logic - Counters, Dividers incorporates electronic components which can be employed to count, divide and make decisions within a system. One such counter, divider and decision making device is the CD4029BPWG4. This device offers advanced features such as Quad Clock Drivers, Internal Output Latch and Memory, and two independent Quasi-Static 3-State Outputs.
The CD4029BPWG4 is a 4 Bit Ripple Counter Divider fabricated in NMOS technology which can be utilized in several applications due to its versatile features. It counts in a range of 0-15 and can be used in digital hand-held devices, microprocessor, industrial process controllers, fan speed control and automotive applications. The device operates at supply voltages ranging from 4.5V to 10V and comes with a range of input and output voltages.
The working principle of CD4029BPWG4 consists of 4 different counter divided into 4 sections. The sections can be used independently or combined. Each section contains a counting stage, 32 Kbit memory and NAND gates which define the logic operation for each stage. Each stage is connected in such a way that all the signals from the input latch, divider and output latch are transferred to the memory. This process continues until all the stages have been programmed. The data in each stage is then sent to the output latch and the output is reset. This cycle is repeated infinitely until the power is shut off.
The CD4029BPWG4 has two modes of operation. The synchronous mode enables counting to occur in response to the positive edge of the clock signal. While the asynchronous mode allows the counter to begin or end counting when a logic level change is detected at the output of the divider. Both the asynchronous and synchronous modes can be programmed and enabled through the CONTROL signal.
The CD4029BPWG4 has inbuilt protection against excessive current at the inputs and outputs. This is used to prevent accidental overcurrent when the device is powered on. Furthermore, the device is designed with EMI immunity and electrostatic protection to prevent any noise and static charge from affecting the accuracy of the counting.
