Logic - Multivibrators is a type of electrical circuit which generates rectangular or square pulses of alternating levels. It is a two-stable state device with two states, one of which is active, while the other is passive. The inputs of a logic multivibrator are mainly composed of two inputs, one active and one passive, and a common input which provides both inputs with an equal value. The CD4047BEG4 is a CMOS, 14-pin DIP, dual Monostable/Astable Multivibrator designed for use with a minimum number of external components. It has been designed to allow wide variations in operating and pulse-width conditions from a single power supply voltage. So it can be used in various types of applications such as logic, timer, oscillator, creating pulses and ‘latching’ pulses.As for its working principle, the CD4047BE device is a CMOS circuit that provides the necessary triggering of a pulse output for use in vast types of circuits. The CD4047BE consists of an oscillator section and an output circuit. The oscillator section has a triangle- or sawtooth-wave generator and a comparator which provides an output pulse when an externally-applied voltage (from an on/off switch or logic input) causes the comparator to switch the low or high output state or the transition between them.The output circuit of the CD4047BE consists of a flip-flop, an amplifier, and an output transistor. The output flip-flop can be configured as either a single shot (one-shot) or repetitive pulse output which depends on the state of an ‘ triggering’ signal from the comparator. When the comparator changes state, the flip-flop output changes and the output transistor switches outputting a pulse (active-high or active-low) depending on the set-up(i.e. active-low or active-highoutputting).The CD4047BE device is ideal for a wide range of applications, such as the generation of control pulses for motor controllers, music synths, digital clocks, pulse-width modulated pulses, alarms, timers, frequency-to-voltage converters, time-delays, and electronic dice/ roulette applications. As a logic multivibrator, the CD4047BE device also produces a fixed period of electrical pulses by simply connecting it to a voltage power supply.Applications of multi-vibrator circuits are broad and range from automotive applications such as alarm systems, to medical applications such as heart monitoring systems, to communications applications such as modems, and even to computer games such as electronic dice or roulette. The CD4047BEG4 chip is an excellent choice for these applications. It has a wide range of operating voltage (1.25V-15V) and low current consumption (5mA typically), which makes it easy to use in a variety of applications.Since the CD4047 BE chip is a multi-vibrator circuit, it would require a fixed period of electrical pulses to generate output, and this is where the oscillator section of the chip comes in. The comparator then compares the input signal with a reference voltage and provides either a low or a high output when the input signal transitions between the low and high levels.
