The CD4098BM96 is a useful and widely used device within the multivibrator family of logic components. It is an integrated circuit designed by Texas Instruments that houses two independent, complementary-symmetry, monostable multivibrators with open-collector outputs. Application field
Due to the nature of a monostable multivibrator, the CD4098BM96 can be used as a timer, as mentioned earlier. Working principle
Monostable multivibrators are triggered by an input signal, which causes them to generate a single pulse of a given length. The length of the pulse generated is determined by its timing components. When triggered, the output of the multivibrator immediately switches, and remains in that state until the timing components allow the effects of the input signal to dissipate. The circuit then reverts to its resting state. When using the CD4098BM96, VCC and VEE should be connected to the appropriate supply voltages.
The CD4098BM96 consists of two, identical, independent circuitry. Each section has two inputs, designated TR and TH (Trigger and Threshold), and one open-collector output (Q). Each circuit has its own timing components, and can be independently triggered by a suitable input. Whenever the logic level at the TR input for a given circuit (IC 1 or IC 2) rises above its threshold, the output at pin Q immediately switches from a low state to a high state. When this occurs, the capacitor connected to it begins charging from the bias current provided by the timing resistor connected to the TH pin. As a result, the voltage at the TH pin eventually rises above the trigger level, and the capacitor connected to the output of the circuit begins to discharge.
Once this occurs, the output of the circuit reverts to its low-state again. This process is referred to as timing and its duration is determined by the value of the capacitor and resistor connected to the circuit, and their interaction. The CD4098BM96 is usually employed in the generation of clock pulses, timing pulses or various other pulse trains in sequential logic systems. It can also be used as a switch or as part of a switch debouncing circuit.
