CD4520BPWRG4, is a 14-stage ripple counter which is integrated with a common dual JK flip flop. This device is also known as a type B counter and is designed to count up or count down the pulses in either direction. CD4520BPWRG4 belongs to logic counters and dividers family. Working principle of CD4520BPWRG4
CD4520BPWRG4 consists of two separate JK flip-flops connected in series. When the ripple clock is low and the reset line is high, the counter always starts from 0 state. At the positive edge of the first clock, the waveform of C1(Q2) changes from high to low and waveform of C2 (Q1) will change from low to high. As JK flip-flops are connected in series, C2 flip-flop waveform will remain high independent of the J and K inputs. A key count line is also connected to the C2 output of both JK flip-flops. When the key count line is low, both JK flip-flops output contains 0. When the key count line is high, and the reset line is low, the waveforms of both flip-flops will contain 1, resulting in the counter reverting back to 0. The counter can be used to count down, by connecting the reset input to the C1 output, the counter will count down one step per clock pulse rising edge. The device can count up to 14 steps, with the output resetting back to 0 when the key count line is triggered.
CD4520BPWRG4 can also be used to generate identification codes. When the reset input is connected to the ripple clock input, the counter will generate a series of 14 pulses when each of the 14 steps is reached. By saturating a switch at each point of the code, a unique code can be generated.
