Flip-flop is an important element of modern digital devices, which is based on bistable circuit. Bistable circuit is a very simple electrical circuit that has two equilibrium state. It can continuously reverses its output state or remain state. Flip-flop has a wide application in the field of computer, communication, control system and so on.
The CD74ACT273EG4 is a flip-flop based on CMOS, which is used for storing information and other applications in electronic equipment. It’s compatible with traditional 74HC273 and 74ACT273, but its power dissipation is lower and its speed is more than twice of the traditional flip-flop. The CD74ACT273EG4 has a high-speed, low-power and low-distortion characteristics. It can contains two flip-flop circuits, one JK flip-flop and a D flip-flop and has 8-pin configuration.
The CD74ACT273EG4 logical circuit schematic is shown in the figure below. It has 6 input I/O pins and 2 output I/O pins. The output pins of the flip-flop, Q and Q’ are directly connected to each other, which can realizes the toggle flip-flop function. The 6 input I/O pins includes two clock pins, two reset pins, two data pins and the Enable pin. The clock pin is used to control the action of the flip-flop and there is two clock input pins, labeled as CLK and CLK_B. CLK and CLK_B are complementary clock signals and it enable the flip-flop to respond faster.

The two reset pins are labeled MR and MR_B, they are complementary reset pins and can bring the flip-flop to a specified state of the Q output. The two data pins are called J and K, they are used to determine the output state of the Q output. The enable pin is labeled TE, which used to enable or disable the operation of flip-flop when it is in the low or High state.
The working principle of the CD74ACT273EG4 flip-flop is as follows: When the clock pin goes High, the input I/O pins take action and change the output state of the flip-flop depending on the logic level of other input pins . There are four cases of the output state depends on the logic state of input pins J, K and enable pin TE.
- If enable pin TE= 0 and J and K both = 0, the Q output = 0.
- If enable pin TE = 0 and J = 1 and K = 0, the Q output = 1.
- If enable pin TE = 0 and J = 0 and K = 1, the Q output = 0.
- If enable pin TE = 0 and J and K both = 1, the Q output = 0.
The flip-flop will toggle its state when J and K are both 1. The toggle state of flip-flop can also be used to make the asynchronous pulse generator of the digital system.
The CD74ACT273EG4 has many application fields such as digital logic control, data storage, memory and so on. In digital logic control, it can used as a counter or register with JK flip-flop which containing two binary inputs J and K. The pulse generator of synchronous or asynchronous can also be used for timing control.
In data storage application, the flip-flop will store the one-bit data of low-speed data transmission, in this case, it is often used as a shift register with D flip-flop. In selecting the data strobe for control, applying the non-inverting gate. And often work with other D flip-flop to storage multiple-bit data.
