CD74HC4050E is a high speed CMOS logic shift register. It belongs to the family of Logic - Buffers, Drivers, Receivers, Transceivers. It usually consists of 8 stage shift registers with an internal oscillator at one end. Each register has its own respective output pin as well as a common output pin. The shift registers contain four flip-flops and a set/reset circuit in order to achieve the desired output. The internal clock oscillator can be adjusted to get the required speed.
The primary application of the CD74HC4050E is to shift data from one point to another in a serial format. This device can be used to transfer the data from one processor to another, from one device to another or from one node to another in a communication network. This device can also be utilized for data storage or output control. In addition, it is a perfect choice for design of multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC) where a high speed input data is required.
This device has typical operating power of 20 mA and supply voltage range of 4.5 to 5.5 VDC. The output signal is presented in four forms, namely binary 2’s complement, binary 1’s complement, binary phase and true phase. Furthermore, this device is capable of operating with temperatures between -55 ⁰C to 125⁰C in commercial, industrial and automotive grade applications. Its propagation delay is about 10 ns or less depending on the supply voltage and temperature.
The working principal of the CD74HC4050E is simple enough. By applying a parallel data input at its input side and a clock signal at its clock side, it will produce a serial output from the data that was entered. The internal clocking circuitry will produce an oscillating signal that will run at the rate of the desired frequency. With each tick of the oscillator, the data will be shifted out of the register one bit at a time. The output signal of this device is activated on the negative edge of the clock signal.
As a result, the CD74HC4050E is an ideal device for data transfer applications. Due to its internal oscillator, it is capable of quickly shifting data input to its output pins which gives it the ability to be used in high speed devices.
