CD74FCT541E, a member of the Texas Instruments’ FCT family, is a high speed devices ideal for traditional buffer, driver and receiver applications. Its members ensure low on-state output resistance and low total power dissipation. In addition to the features of the CD74FCT540E, the FCT541E possesses two separate outputs for each of their Input-Output lines that are controlled by a common enable (OE). As such, the device provides higher performance in drive and receive applications than previous FCT devices.

The CD74FCT541E is a quad tri-state buffer compatible with industry-standard TTL logic levels. It enables high-performance data transfers and is ideal for interfacing between 5 V and 3 V systems or between 5 V and 2.5 V systems. The device is available in both 8-pin plastic-DIP and 16-pin SOIC packages.

Application Field

Working Principle

The CD74FCT541E uses the totem pole configuration meaning that the output contains both transistors and resistors for driving the output. The device has four active-low, common enable inputs and four active-low, three-state output enable inputs which allows multiple drivers to be ganged together and controlled by a single input line. The device also features a clamped diode output design, which helps to reduce the effects from negative transients that may occur during output transitions. When the input is ‘low’, the output is ‘off’. When the input is ‘high’, the output is ‘on’.

The FCT541E also includes a circuit protection feature, which is an active clamping of the output transistors. This feature helps to prevent any negative transients that may occur during output transitions which greatly improves the reliability of the device. The device also supports multi-rail logic levels, meaning that the output can be driven at both ‘high’ and ‘low’, depending on the type of logic used. This makes it ideal for interfacing between 5 V and 3 V and 5 V and 2.5 V logic.

The FCT541E also has high-power and low-power modes, which helps to reduce power consumption when not actively driving a load. In ‘high-power’ mode, the output can drive high-impedance loads and manage high capacitive loads without significant performance degradation. In ‘low-power’ mode, the power consumption is reduced considerably, making the device more cost-effective for designs that require a low-power solution.
