The working principle of CD74HC126E is based on a simple flip-flop circuit, each contains a set and reset input. The DATA in and DATA out connections are for data input and output. A separate functions that can be used to control which logic state is presented at the outputs. This is the CLK input, when CLK is connected to HIGH the DATA present at the DATA in line is clocked into the flip-flop, this is placed on the output lines.
When the CLK pin is at ground level the DATA present at DATA can still reach the output lines, however this data is ignored for the output. The three state capability comes from the 3rd ‘enable’ pin. This can be controlled by the user, High to enable and LOW to disable.
When enabled the output lines are connected to the flip-flop present data, when disabled the output lines are disconnected; they become ‘floating’ or in other words they become high impedance. This is known as the High Impedance state.
The combined effect of the above description is that the CD74HC126E gives an extra ‘enable’ step to control a single pin connection to the outside world. This is useful in situations where multiple IC\'s are connected all off the same pin on a microcontroller, for example, in a multiplexed LED display.
The CD74HC126E has a wide range of use cases from power management, load switch, embedded system and industrial control. It allows users to present the data from any of the output lines at any time when enabled. When disabled it provides a high impedance output and thus prevents data being outputted to any connected devices.
