The CD74HC161MG4 is a high speed CMOS LOGIC 4-bit synchronous binary counter composed of four master/slave flip-flops with common CLOCK and asynchronous clear inputs. The logic chip has an array of four positive edge triggered D-type flip-flops. It features natural BCD, binary, gray code or direct output from the four flip-flops, allowing implementation of divide-by-n counter or various other counting applications. The four flip-flops divide a clock frequency into sixteen parts.

Working Principle

The CD74HC161MG4 chip is a 4-bit synchronous counter, composed of four master/slave flip-flops with a common clock and asynchronous clear inputs. Each of the four flip-flops has a separate, permanently enabled D-type input for data loading. After the data is loaded into the flip-flop, it is incremented by one count, referred to as a binary count, when a positive transition of the clock signal (rising edge) is detected. Subsequently, the four flip-flops can be concatenated in cascading mode to form an 8-bit or 16-bit synchronous counter. The total count is determined by the initial value and the number of rising edges of the clock signal.

The CD74HC161MG4 chip has two control inputs, Clock (CP) and Clear (CLR). The Clock input is used to shift data from one flip-flop input to the output of the next flip-flop sequentially. If the chip is enabled, the clock pulses will cause the content of the flip-flop to increment. The dynamic sequence of the logic states is determined by the initial states of the flip-flops, the binary count, and the number of the clock pulses. The Clear input is used to clear the flip-flops and reset the counter to its initial (zero) count. The Clear input is asynchronous and active LOW. When the Clear input is LOW, the output is forced to LOW, no matter what the clock signal is.

The CD74HC161MG4 logic chip is capable of operating in several modes. It can perform as a reversible counter, a BCD counter, a binary counter, or a gray counter. In BCD (binary coded decimal) mode, the output sequence consists of 16 decimal digits that represent 0-9 and then wraps back to 0. In binary counter mode, the output consists of 16 binary numbers that represent 0-15, and in gray counter mode, 8 binary codes (0-7) are repeated twice. Additionally, the chip can be used in various other counting applications, such as divide-by-n counters, code converters, multiplexers and demultiplexers.
