CD74HC193M96E4 is an adjustable 4-bit binary counter that contains four individual flip-flops and counts in either it’s binary or BCD (Binary-Coded Decimal) formats. In binary counting mode, after each clock pulse or divided system clock pulse is applied to its clock input (CP), the counter will sequentially count up to a preset value and then reset to zero, also known as zero count. The count is decoded by two 4-bit output Decoder, QCout and QCoutb, which generate the output codes of 0-15 and 15-0, respectively in Binary-Coded Decimal format. In Binary-Coded Decimal (BCD) format, the four outputs together show the count, in binary, from 0-15. In binary counting mode, the count is sequentially incremented by one for every positive edge at the clock input.
When the counter reaches the preset value, the count is reset to zero, the buffer output for the two least significant bit stages, QCout and QCoutb, produces a pattern of four bits. This pattern can be used to control a display and to generate a zero-count reset of the display.
The CD74HC193M96E4 also has some advanced features, like the pin-strapped synchronous reset, which allows the counter to be reset when the synchronous reset is activated.
