Logic - Multivibrators The CD74HC221E is a two-output monostable multivibrator logic chip that is generally used to generate one clock pulse, or an output pulse with a single input trigger. The length of the output pulse can be externally adjusted using a potentiometer. The output pulse width is determined by the potentiometer setting and the duration of the trigger. The circuit provides independent triggering of the two outputs, allowing for a longer or shorter pulse width of each output. The CD74HC221E is suitable for clock generation in timing applications and for pulse generation in control systems. It is applicable for low-speed pulse, square wave and sawtooth wave generation, as well as event control and timing, including a wide variety of asynchronous clocks. The CD74HC 221E features a single, common trigger input, two separately adjustable output pulse widths, and a common timing input to control output pulse length. The trigger and timing inputs accept positive and negative inputs, and the chip consumes very little power when idle. It also has an adjustable timing cycle, with a minimum of 0.8 microseconds. When triggered, the CD74HC221E immediately starts a timing cycle that is set by its timing input. While the timing cycle is in progress, the two outputs remain in their states until the timings ends. At this point, the output of the first line is activated (high or low depending on the timing), and the output of the second line is in the opposite state. The timing inputs are very important in the CD74HC221E. They have a range from -3V to +3V and an accuracy of 500ns. The inputs determine the length of the output pulse width, by setting the amount of time for which the output pulse will remain high or low. Additionally, the chip features open-drain outputs that allow it to drive both CMOS and TTL logic gates. The chip also features a power on reset circuit that prevents false triggering upon power up. When the chip is powered on, the outputs default to their low state, and the timing cycle will only start when the trigger input is applied.
