Evaluation Boards - Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs)
Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are widely used in a variety of fields. They play an important role in relaying data from analog sources into digital formats that can be processed by computers and other digital devices. One type of ADC, the CDB5368, has numerous applications and a well-defined working principle, which will be discussed in this article.
The CDB5368 is a CMOS switched capacitor ADC. It is designed to convert large dynamic range signals in the range of –10V to +10V. It utilizes a patent-pending advanced tracking mechanism to achieve a maximum differential non-linearity (DNL) of 2.5 ppm and a maximum integral non-linearity (INL) of 4.5 ppm over its entire range. The CDB5368 can be used in many different applications, including stage monitors, robots, machine vision, flow control, medical imaging, low latency streaming audio, and RF systems. In a stage monitor for example, the processor processes the analog signal output from the microphone to detect and amplify the audio. A CDB5368 ADC is necessary for the processor to convert the analog signal to a digital one for further processing.
The principle behind the CDB5368\'s operation is based on the switched capacitor (SC) technology. In this type of ADC, a capacitor with a varying capacitance is switched between two plate voltages - a reference voltage and an input voltage - in order to form a sample-and-hold circuit. The output voltage is proportional to the ratio of the two voltages, thus enabling an accurate conversion from analog to digital.
The CDB5368 is an 8-bit, +10V, –10V dynamic range converter. It operates on a 5V power supply and features a wide range of analog input voltage that is as small as 100μV and as large as 10V. It offers the flexibility of easy connections using standard digital logic, optical digital input, and analog input. As with any CMOS switched capacitor circuit, the converter requires an integration time to acquire the charge from the input signal.
The CDB5368 is ideal for high-accuracy, low-latency applications. It features a fast sample and hold time of 1.2 μs, as well as a conversion time of 20 μs. Furthermore, the on-board clock enables the device to sample and hold the input signal to a maximum precision of 0.1%. The converter also features low noise levels, by using advanced programmable gain amplifiers to reduce electromagnetic interference.
The CDB5368 is an excellent choice for applications where accuracy and precision are key.
