Diodes are semiconductor devices that permit the flow of current predominantly in one direction and disable the flow in another. Rectifiers are devices which convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). A Single Rectifier is a rectifier with a single diode to convert AC voltage and current to DC voltage and current. The working principle of the CDBA5150-HF Single Rectifier is based on the P-N junction theory of semiconductors. When a positive potential is applied to the anode and a negative potential is applied to the cathode, electrons in the N-type semiconductor are attracted to the anode and holes in the P-type semiconductor are attracted to the cathode. This creates a depletion region near the junction known as the barrier potential. The electrons and holes that make up the depletion layer oppose further current flow. The abrupt nature of the depletion layer at the P-N junction offers resistance to current flow in one direction.
The current flow through a diode is dependent on the applied voltage. At low forward voltages, the diode is not conducting and an exponential increase in current occurs as forward voltage increases. This exponential increase continues until a point of saturation is reached, which occurs when the forward voltage is near its peak. At saturation, the diode current is limited by the internal resistance of the diode. At large forward voltages, the current through the diode begins to decrease due to resistance in the depletion layer.
A single rectifier is used to switch the current between two nodes. When a positive potential is applied to the anode, current flows through the diode due to the resistance in the depletion layer. When a negative potential is applied to the cathode, the diode is reversed biased and current flow is blocked. By switching the polarity of the applied voltage, the current through the diode is reversed.
