The device is normally operated in a reverse bias mode, where the voltage across the diode is higher than the "Zener voltage" of the device. The reversal of the electrical field due to the high voltage applied, causes a large current to flow through the diode in the reverse direction, resulting in the breakdown of the junction. This phenomenon is called Zener break down.As the current through the diode is increased, the voltage across it will remain constant, as long as this voltage is lower than the “Zener voltage”. The electrical property of the device that allows it to regulate the voltage across its terminals is called the voltage regulation factor, or VRF.
