CDLL4779 Application Field and Working Principle of Single Zener Diodes

A Zener diode has the semiconductor junction of a diode in the reverse biased direction. A small current, when connected in the reverse direction, causes the diode to break down and voltage appears across its ends. This influence is called as Zener effect and the diode through which it takes place is called as a Zener diode. General

CDLL4779 single Zener diode is composed of a symmetrical N+/P- diode structure with a heavily doped auxiliary region. The doped layers become the Zener characteristic in the depletion regions and allow the whole device to be more tolerant to Zener voltage changes. An asymmetric Zener characteristic can easily be obtained with the use of a layer of high resistivity lightly doped N- buried layer. This layer or N- layer will control the current flow by causing the depletion region to shrink along the axial end of the diode.
