CDLL5937C Application Field and Working Principle

CDLL5937C is a single Zener diodes, produced by popular electronics component manufacturer China Semiconductor Limited. It is widely used in the protection of electronic equipment against overvoltage, and its application field includes automotive electronics, telecommunication equipments and electronics in daily life. The CDLL5937C is based on a PN junction composed of n-type and p-type semiconductors.

Working Principle

When there is no bias voltage applied, the PN junction is off, which means there is an infinite resistance in the circuit. When forward bias voltage applies to the PN junction, then electrons and holes are injected into the PN junction, seeping across it and makes it easier for a current to flow. The Zener diode device made of CDLL5937C is designed in a way that the voltage over the PN junction will break down at the reverse-bias direction, or the Zener breakdown mode. This means that a certain electric field at the junction is reached, resulting in a number of electrons crossing the junction and giving rise to a flow of reverse current, much higher than under normal operation. Under Zener breakdown mode, the reverse current flowing through the PN junction can be kept stable. This makes the device useful in various electronic applications, such as voltage regulator, voltage peak limiter and surge protector. In other words, the CDLL5937C device produces the reverse current in the circuit to protect the electronic equipment against overvoltage, thus providing the protection needed for other electrical components in the same circuit.
