When the reverse bias voltage reaches a certain level, the Zener breakdown voltage of the diode, the device begins to conduct current.

The reverse breakdown voltage can be adjusted by changing the impurity levels of the semiconductor material, or by changing the geometry of the device. The Zener breakdown built into the frame of the diode also plays a major part in adjusting the reverse breakdown voltage. The power consumption of the device is also dependent on the reverse breakdown voltage and varies according to the application.
