Introduction

The CDLL963A is a single Zener diode manufactured and marketed by Nexperia, formerly Philips Semiconductors. It is a general-purpose Zener diode which works with a wide range of power supply voltages. It is designed for use in regulating the voltage in circuits, as well as providing voltage protection, current limitation and power production applications. It has a broad range of voltage tolerance from 6.2V to 200V, with higher Zener-impedance ratings at lower breakdown voltages, enabling the Zener diode to be used in both power applications and long-term reliability applications.

Application Field

The CDLL963A can be used in a variety of applications, including voltage protection and current limitation. Working Principle

The working principle of the CDLL963A is essentially the same as that of any zener diode. It operates by passing a current through an element called a depletion layer, which is essentially an insulator and the diode itself. When the diode’s reverse voltage exceeds a certain threshold, known as the Zener voltage, electrons are generated in the depletion layer, which momentarily neutralises the depletion layer and constitutes a short circuit.

With the diode passing current during this reverse breakdown, the resulting regulated output voltage will be the Zener voltage. In other words, when the input voltage reaches the Zener voltage of the diode, the diode will regulate the output voltage to the Zener voltage. This is known as Zener regulation, and the diode is referred to as a Zener diode.

The CDLL963A also features several safety and self-protection features, such as overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown, which make it particularly suitable for use in power supply applications, as well as in any other application where precise and continual voltage regulation is required.
