Single Zener diodes are widely used in circuit applications for voltage regulation, current regulation and other specialized purposes. Typical diode designations usually start with the letter “Z” for its Zener characteristic, followed by a two- or three-digit encoding that indicates the reverse breakdown voltage. For example, “CDLL980B” represents an 800 mV single Zener Diode.
The CDLL980B is a small signal Shottky diode with a low voltage drop and a shallow 9V reverse breakdown voltage. It is widely used in a variety of low-power electrical and electronic devices, including: mobile phones, tablets, laptops, personal digital assistants, portable music players and other consumer electronics devices.
The working principle of a Zener diode is based on avalanche breakdown. It has two electrodes, an anode and a cathode. When the voltage between the two electrodes reaches a certain value, called the breakdown voltage, the current increases dramatically due to the avalanche effect.
