This Zener diode is suitable for reliable voltage regulation; applications include use in precision voltage references for instrumentation and power supply design, as well as for clamping applications such as protection from inductive spikes.

Type and Structure of Zener Diode

Working Principle of Zener Diodes

When the voltage across the Zener diode reaches a certain threshold, the diode begins to conduct and the current flows in the reverse direction, allowing the Zener diode to regulate and stabilize a fixed voltage across itself. This regulation is then used to provide a reference voltage or stabilize voltage levels. As the voltage across the diode increases, the wider the depletion layer becomes, hence the diode is able to pass more current.

Applications of Zener Diodes

Zener diodes are widely used in many applications including voltage regulation, DC-DC power supplies, overvoltage protection and pulse shaping. By placing a Zener diode in a circuit, it acts as a voltage regulator, ensuring that the voltage never exceeds its breakdown voltage and thus preventing any overvoltage from damaging other components. In DC-DC power supplies, the Zener diode is used to create a stable output voltage. Another popular use of Zener diodes is pulse shaping. By placing a Zener diode in series with a capacitor, the capacitor will be charged until the Zener diode reaches its breakdown voltage, at which point the capacitor will discharge.
