TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes have recently gained much attention as a protection device because of their ability to limit the functioning of electronics and electrical devices from voltage spike due to lightening and other similar transient activities. TVS diodes are unidirectional semiconductor components that function as a voltage clamp. In other words, this diode will discharge excessive voltage in order to prevent overvoltage or overcurrent from damaging other components, while still allowing an acceptable operating voltage for the system.
The CDSOD323-T05LC (VFD/LED TVS) is a medium power, low capacitance transient voltage suppressor diode with a wide operating voltage range of 4 V to 18 V, making it ideal for ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) protection in a variety of small device applications. It is a series of zener diodes manufactured in a proprietary process in which they can be reproduced consistently across devices and operating conditions. This TVS diode also features a low leakage current (65nA, typ) and high clamping for further protection.
Application Field
CDSOD323-T05LC is well suited for application in low-profile, tightly spaced designs such as flat panel displays, cell phones, tablet computers, and other portable devices that may become subjected to higher ESD voltages due to the potential for significant mobile ESD events. This device will also provide necessary protection for the LED backlight packages in LCD displays, as well as driver ICs.
Additionally, CDSOD323-T05LC can be found in many automotive applications due to its very high ESD clamping capability (2kV HBM & CPM) as well as its very low capacitance (2pF, typ). It is also designed to meet the demanding ISO7637-2 pulsing requirement, which makes it suitable for use in automotive data/LAN systems, service bus, Serial, and CANbus high-speed systems.
Working Principle
The CDSOD323-T05LC TVS diode is designed to protect the system from transient voltage surges caused by ESD events. This diode works by clamping the voltage down to an acceptable level in order to protect other components from being damaged by the over voltage. The clamping voltage is determined by the zener voltage (Vz) which is set by the manufacturer for a specific range of operating conditions.
When the transient voltage surge exceeds the preset Vz, the diode will begin to conduct and transfer the excess energy into the grounds and other components of the system. The current through the diode is limited by the power dissipation rating (Pd). This is why it is important to select a TVS diode with a high enough power rating for the specific system in order to ensure the safe functioning of the device.
Once the transient voltage surge has been reduced, the diode will stop conducting and return to its non-conductive state. This permits the system to once again operate within the acceptable range of voltages and protect itself from further voltage spikes. Thanks to its ability to quickly respond to ESD events and its low capacitance, the CDSOD323-T05LC is an ideal device for providing protection against ESD in small devices.
