TVS - Diodes

A TVS - or Transient Voltage Suppression - diode is a specialized type of semiconductor diode with enhanced voltage and clamping properties designed to protect sensitive electronics from transient events.

The CDSOT236-T24C is a TVS diode designed to protect sensitive electronics from transients caused by a variety of sources, including electrostatic discharge (ESD), power induction, and electrical overstress (EOS). It has a peak pulse power rating of 1000W at 8/20 microseconds and a clamping voltage rating of 24V.

This TVS diode has primary application in a wide variety of fields, including automotive, consumer electronics, medical, and industrial applications. In automotive applications, the diode is used for ESD protection of airbag driver circuits, while in consumer electronics it can be used to protect ICs from ESD. Working principle

The CDSOT236-T24C is constructed from two components: a diode and a Zener diode. The diode is designed to block any forward current from entering the device while the Zener diode is designed to conduct a reverse current when the reverse voltage reaches the maximum breakdown voltage. During periods of low or no reverse voltage, the Zener diode remains in a non-conductive state.

When a transient event occurs, the voltage rises rapidly, and the Zener diode begins to conduct. The diode then acts as a shorting device, allowing the excess current to pass through it and clamp down the voltage to a safe level. The surge current is then dissipated in the form of heat, protecting the device it is connected to from damage.

Once the transient event has passed, the diode resumes its blocking state and the clamping voltage eventually returns to the diode’s breakdown voltage. This action helps in protecting the device from further damage caused by any other transient pulses.
