Transient voltage suppressors (TVSs) are a type of surge protector designed to prevent electrical damage from high voltage transients. TVSs are commonly used to protect sensitive electronic components from overvoltage damage caused by lightning or electrical transients. CG0603MLC-24LE is designed for surge protection applications. It is used in a DC or pulsed AC environment, ranging from 4 V to 24 V. It is a transient voltage suppressor which offers equivalent to four 400 W metal oxide varistors (MOVs) in one package, provides superior circuit protection against destructive surges. In this device, four Zinc Oxide (MOV) die are connected in parallel. The parallel connection of the four Zinc Oxide (MOV) die will reduce the overall capacitance and improve response speed. With its ultra-low capacitance & high surge current capability, the CG0603MLC-24LE is perfect for consumer electronic devices and automotive applications where transient protection is critical.
CG0603MLC-24LE is made up of two pieces: a substrate and a shield layer. The substrate is the main protection component. It has four 400 W Zinc Oxide layers connected in parallel. The shield layer is used as an electrostatic shield to reduce ESD energy entering the device, and prevent external electric field interference. By reducing the impact of external electric field interference on the device, it effectively improves the surge current capability of the device.
CG0603MLC-24LE offers the highest surge current capability among similar TVSs with a wide operating temperature range (-55°C to 105°C). It also has an extremely fast response time (less than 1 ns), superior ESD protection (up to 600 W), and a low aspect ratio (<1). Additionally, the device operates with an extremely low holding current and has a high operating voltage range (4 to 24 V). All these features make the CG0603MLC-24LE an ideal choice for transient protection applications in consumer electronic equipment, automotive, and industrial applications.
In terms of its working principle, when an over-voltage transient appears in a circuit, the CG0603MLC-24LE will respond almost immediately, conducting the transient current away from the sensitive equipment. The Zinc Oxide layers in the device will act to limit the voltage to a safe level, thus protecting the device. As the voltage across the Zinc Oxide layers increases, the material’s resistance decreases, allowing current to flow. As the current passes through the device, it accelerates and dissipates the energy released by the over-voltage transient.
