The spark is directed and limited in duration by the construction of the GDT, which acts as a spark gap, allowing the current to automatically extinguish much quicker than when a normal air gap was used. This energy is then dissipated safely without any permanent damage to the circuit.

In addition, CG110LTR has a built-in surge current divert component, which can divert the surge current away from the protected line, away from sensitive circuits and into the GDT thus providing complete over-voltage protection.
