Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) arresters are devices used to protect electronic equipment from overvoltage and transient high voltage surges. GDT arresters can also protect high voltage circuits and other vulnerable systems. They are designed to protect solid-state and organic electronics by diverting electrical surges which exceed the normal operating voltage of a device. GDTs are commonly used in applications such as power supplies, data and telecommunication systems, medical imaging and automotive systems.

CG5600MS is a kind of GDT arrester. It is a balanced multicomponent arrester designed for protecting telecommunications equipment against lightning and electrostatic discharges, such as phone lines, radio systems, high voltage loads, and more. The main components of the CG5600MS are three metal oxide varistors (MOV) and four gas discharge tubes (GDT). Its working principle is based on the series combination of MOVs and GDTs.

When the incident voltage is below the varistor voltage, only the same current will pass through both MOVs, acting as a low resistance path, hence no additional current flow through GDTs. Thus, the arrester remain in the OFF state. When the incident voltage is higher than the varistor voltage, an avalanche process starts in Momentary Operation State (MOS), where most of the current passes through MOVs but at the same time, some current flow through GDTs due to a decrease in GDT impedance.

At this stage, some voltage will appear across the GDT gap. When the incident voltage increases or voltage impulse duration exceeds, the gap voltage increases and causes ionization in GDT, resulting in avalanche in Spark Over state. After that, the arrester transfers into a Conductive state. The current between anode and cathode electrodes of GDT is controlled by the voltage across the gap and the electric field strength inside GDT region. After the transient voltage passes, the GDT is self-restored and the arrester automatically adjusts back into the OFF state.

The CG5600MS arrester benefits from the wide-band protection characteristics of GDTs combined with the highest current ability of MOVs. It has excellent lightning strike protection capability and extremely low absorption voltage which create superior protection to both ICs and MEMS. It is suitable for protection applications such as telecom systems, power supply system, electronic components, public and private networks, as well as mobile communication networks.
