Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are commonly used in electrical power systems to protect against lightning and switching transients, and have been successfully applied in applications such as gas-insulated (GIS) switchgear systems, high voltage cable networks and overhead power systems. GDTs are often referred to as surge suppressors or surge protectors.
CG90 application fields and their working principles are mainly for the protection of overhead power lines, GIS switchgear, and in power station which handles high voltage transformers, distribution boxes, generators, motors and other high voltage and low voltage electrical equipments. CG90 provides direct lightning and switching transient protection in insulated power systems. It works by slowly releasing, or “priming”, the electricity and providing a variable resistance component which prevents over current in the system.
The variable resistance in the CG90 comes from the use of a gas discharge tube filled with a special gas that slowly releases the high voltage energy when required. The electrodes of the GDT also act as small coils, allowing for a partial reflections of the high voltage energy back into the system. When the CG90 is initially energised, the GDT conductance is at a minimum and it takes a certain amount of time for the GDT to reach its full capacity.
During operation, a high voltage surge builds up in the system and the gas discharge tube in the CG90 begins to allow current flow at a given rate, allowing for a slow release of electricity. This prevents the power system from taking on too much current at once. As the surge dissipates and the current level in the system drops to a safe level, the GDT begins to close down, effectively putting an end to the electrical current. This process helps to protect the electrical system from damage due to high-voltage surges and transients.
A CG90 is also known as a spark gap arrestor. The gap between the electrodes of the GDT is adjustable, making it possible to tailor the protection system for specific electrical applications. The adjustable gap allows for the adjustment of the resistance offered by the GDT, as well as the time required for the GDT to reach full capacity. CG90 spark gap arrestors come in standard and custom designs, and can handle up to 1500 volts.
In summary, CG90 application fields and their working principles are mainly for the protection of overhead power lines, GIS switchgear, and power station which handles high voltage transformers, distribution boxes, generators, motors and other high voltage and low voltage electrical equipments. The GDT in the CG90 provides a variable resistance, slowly releasing the electricity and preventing the power system from taking on too much current at once, while also reflecting some of the high voltage energy back into the system. The adjustable gap between the electrodes of the GDT also allows for the protection system to be tailored for specific applications. The CG90 spark gap arrestors can handle up to 1500 volts.
