Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are capacitors consisting of a very thin layer of aluminum oxide acting as a dielectric and two aluminum electrodes surrounded by an electrolyte. CGS124UNX5L3PD is one of such aluminum electrolytic capacitors.Applications of CGS124UNX5L3PD include its use in high frequency and high voltage rectifiers, variable frequency drives, frequency synthesizers, and resonant circuits. It can also be employed in power supplies of desktop computers, digital recorders, copiers, and printers. Moreover, the capacitor’s performance characteristics are well-suited for LED drivers, UPS systems, and DC-DC converters.The everyday working principles of aluminum electrolytic capacitors such as CGS124UNX5L3PD involve a unique combination of a very thin layer of aluminum oxide acting as the dielectric and two aluminum electrodes. The electrolyte separation of the dielectric aluminum oxide and the opposite aluminum electrodes is created by pressing the external pressure.In order to build a capacitor with this kind of construction, two aluminum foils with a special oxidation layer are put in an electrolyte. These foils are in contact with the electrolyte fluid and build the anode and cathode of the capacitor. An external electrical voltage is applied to the capacitor. This voltage causes ions from the electrolyte to migrate to the anode and build a thin dielectric layer between the aluminum layers. During this building up process of the dielectric layer, an electric current passes through the electrolyte because the ions have an electrical charge. This electric current varies during the charge/discharge build-up of said dielectric layer. As a result, this transfer of electric charge attains two effects: first, it stores energy like a conventional capacitor and second, it distributes electric charge between both aluminum plates.At the end of the charge process, there is only a low resistance path between the two electrodes of the capacitor and therefore a very little current passes through the electrolyte. This process is the same during the entire discharge process.When it comes to CGS124UNX5L3PD, the capacitor has two major characteristics: high frequency and voltage capacitance, and low leakage current.The high frequency and voltage capacitance of CGS124UNX5L3PD is attained by the special lay-out of the capacitor and the state-of-the-art aluminum anode with its oxidation layer (using a special alloy for the anode).In addition, the low leakage current is attained by the use of electrolyte’s location and specially designed electrodes. The location of the electrolyte determines the resistance of the electrons and ions passing through the electrolyte, thus minimizing the leakage currents.
