The CMOZ13V TR diode is a single Zener diode composed of a single junction of P-type and N-type semiconductor material. It is designed to have a specific breakdown voltage Vz, which is usually between 5.6V and 13 V. CMOZ13V TR diodes are specifically designed to provide a regulated voltage source rather than or in addition to ordinary rectification. They are designed to have stability, low noise, and fast dynamic response properties, allowing them to provide better electrical performance than traditional rectifiers.

When a diode is connected in either a forward or reverse bias state, the current flowing through the junction is affected by the applied voltage. As the voltage is increased in the forward bias state, the current will increase proportionally until the breakdown voltage Vz is reached. When the voltage reaches Vz, current will abruptly increase as it breaks down the internal junction of the diode, and then remain constant across the diode.

In the reverse bias state, current is limited mainly by the reverse leakage current. When the voltage is increased in the opposite direction, the current remains low, until a certain reverse voltage is applied. At this point, called the Zener voltage, the reverse current begins to increase rapidly and the voltage remains constant, assuming a nonlinear “knee” shape, magnifying the effect of the voltage on the reverse current. This Zener voltage is set at the desired breakdown voltage Vz.

In the case of the CMOZ13V TR diode, the breakdown voltage, or Vz, is set at 13V. CMOZ13V TR diodes also feature an avalanche breakdown, which is when a large identical current suddenly flows across the reverse junction of the diode, causing large surge voltages. To accommodate this type of breakdown, most CMOZ13V TR diodes use an additional spike arresting circuit to prevent surges.

When applying a CMOZ13V TR diode, it is important to note that the expected voltage can differ slightly from the set Vz, depending on the temperature and current conditions. It is necessary to use an appropriate heatsink to dissipate the heat generated by the diode, since it will reduce the voltage shift due to temperature. If a current lower than the operating current is applied, the Zener voltage can shift above the desired voltage.
