Working Principle
The operation of an CN649 Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) is based on the principle that the voltage drop across it increases when the input voltage exceeds its clamping voltage (V(BR)). When the input voltage increases beyond the device’s clamping voltage, a current starts flowing through the device and is limited to the device evaluation. The current is limited by the breakdown voltage of the device and the impedance of the device. The transient current is then dissipated as heat. The device can absorb a certain amount of energy before it fails and returned to its non-conductive state.
The CN649 Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) can dissipate up to 30 watts of power in order to protect sensitive electronic components from high voltages. The device features an on-state voltage drop of less than 1V and a low leakage current. The TVS is also rated for high surge current handling capacity, with a typical peak current rating of 500mA.
