Solid state relays are electrical switches used to control power distribution within a system. These relays use a semiconductor-based switching device, usually a semiconductor diode or a triac, for their switching and conduction function. The most commonly used solid state relays are CPC1767J solid state relays, which are manufactured by Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. They are considered to be one of the most reliable industry-standard solid state relays.
The CPC1767J solid state relays are designed with an optically insulated semiconductor die, placed within a 4-pin housing. This die provides insulation for the relay\'s switching and conduction function. This insulation distinguishes the CPC1767J solid state relays from conventional electromechanical relays. The operating voltage of CPC1767J relays ranges from 4 to 15 Volts DC, and they are available in both ac or dc load carrying mediums. There are four terminals in the housing with each terminal serving a different purpose:
- Terminal 1: Control or Input pin; used to trigger the silicon die to operate the switching device; usually used to control a transistor.
- Terminal 2: Anode or Power pin; used to provide current required to operate the relay
- Terminal 3: Source or Drive pin; used to provide the control voltage to the input pin, thus allowing the relay to be triggered.
- Terminal 4:Cathode or Ground pin; used to provide a reference point/ground for the relay.
The working principle of a CPC1767J solid state relay is based on the optically isolated thyristor chip used in its manufacturing. When power is applied to the anode or power pin of the relay, the control or input pin is triggered and causes the thyristor chip to conduct and switch the load that is connected to the relay. As the control voltage is applied to the control pin, the load voltage would be activated and thus allowing the load to be triggered and to switch on/off. Unfortunately, the higher the control voltage, the shorter the life of the relay. Therefore, it is recommended to keep control voltage as low as possible.
CPC1767J solid state relays are widely used in various applications due to their fast switching capability, robust design and reliable performance in various environments. These relays are suitable for industrial applications such as motor and heater control, lighting, and temperature and humidity control. It is also commonly used in automotive applications, notably for controlling cooling fans, air conditioning, and sunroofs.
CPC1767J solid state relays are durable and reliable, and their performance is consistent over time, with no additional maintenance required. They are also very easy to install, as the four terminals make the wiring effortless. The added advantage is that CPC1767J relays are also cost effective.
