CS202-4D-2 is a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) that falls within the category of thyristors. Invented in 1957 by Dr. Gordon Hall and Dr. Maz Horowitz at General Electric, thyristors are components composed of four to six layers of alternately N-type and P-type semiconductor materials that offer the advantages of high efficiency, high switching speed, and high voltage capacity – all of which make SCRs important components used in a variety of applications.
Application Field
The CS202-4D-2 is an efficient and robust SCR ideally suited to use in higher operating temperature environments. Its major applications include temperature and/or pressure control in industrial processes, such as furnaces, ovens, and boilers; as well as high-frequency power converters, AC switches, and motor speed control. Furthermore, the CS202-4D-2 is used in various other applications, including motor control, power supplies, timers, and heaters.Working Principle
The CS202-4D-2 is an SCR-controlled rectifier designed to have an anode connected to a negative power supply and a cathode connected to a+ve power supply. When the SCR is in an “off-state”, no current flows through the rectifier. However, when the SCR is energized, either by an applied voltage or a changing magnetic field, current begins to flow through the component. The application of anode voltage to the SCR increases its temperature and causes the depletion region to expand. This enables two layers of the component, the anode and the gate, to come into contact. As the temperature continues to increase, the current begins to flow through the SCR and a voltage drop occurs across it. Thus, the CS202-4D-2 rectifier can be used to extract varying amounts of energy from the power supply based on the magnitude of the selected voltage and current.The CS202-4D-2 component can be turned off by either reducing the gate voltage to a level that drops below the threshold voltage of the component, or by reducing its temperature. This means that the component can also be used to accurately reset the power supply voltage back to a pre-selected level.Conclusion
