Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are computer-bodied systems, which are mainly used in automation and are programmed to respond to conditions in the environment. They consist of two components: an input processor and a controller processor. The input processor receives signals from different switches, sensors or other input devices connected to it. It then processes the signals received transmitting them to the controller processor. This processor then compares the signalled values with the memory of pre-defined values. The output from the controller processor then controls different output devices connected to it like industrial tools, machines etc. Thus, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) can be used for controlling automation systems present in industries like factories, air conditioning systems, boilers, elevators and so on.
The main application of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) is found in the production industry where they are used for simplifying complicated production processes and monitoring & controlling the production machines. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are also extensively used in military, aerospace, medical and telecom applications for controlling different equipment.
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are programmed by using a combination of hardware and software. For programming these controllers, the user must have knowledge of PLC programming languages like Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram etc. Each language has its own syntax and parameters which can be used to instruct the operations that need to be completed. The programming software available makes it easier for the user to program the PLC for any kind of operations and also things like timing, alarms, counters and memory can be programmed in this software.
Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are also employed for fault detection and troubleshooting. The PLC is programmed with pre-defined values that can be used to detect and address any kind of fault. Additional tools like oscilloscopes and current probes can also be employed for troubleshooting PLCs. For example, if the PLC detects too much current consumption in one part of the machine, then it will send an alarm signal and the technician can use other tools to troubleshoot and find the source of the problem. This helps in minimizing downtime of the machines as well as production loss due to the fault.
With the advancement in technology, PLCs have become more powerful and efficient. The user-friendly programming software and development in the programming languages allow the user to create more complicated and advanced logic for controlling automation systems. Additionally, the availability of I/O modules and programming tools for diagnostics, fault detection and troubleshooting make PLCs an effective tool for automation in an industrial setting.
