CSS50054/I is a popular AC DC converter. It is a two phase, PFC and buck based, high power factor, fully flexible AC DC converter. Application Field and Working Principle

The CSS50054/I AC DC converter is primarily used for AC-to-DC voltage conversions, typically from 110 VAC to 24 VDC. It is perfectly suitablefor the low-voltage electronic equipment intended for operations in areas such as telecom, medical, video, industrial, automotive and renewable energy.

The working principle of the CSS50054/I converter can be divided in two stages: the first stage consists in the conversion of the input AC sine wave into a DC signal of a precisely defined voltage; the second stage is the reduction of this DC signal to the required DC output voltage.

In the first stage, the input AC sine wave is converted to a high quality DC signal using a PFC (Power Factor Correction) and a buck-based PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) converter. This process involves two phases: PFC and PWM controller that works together to create an output voltage of high quality, low harmonic distortion and high power factor over a wide range of input voltages, from a lower than the rated input voltage to higher than the rated input voltage.

In the second stage, the high quality DC signal is reduced to the required output voltage using a buck-based DC-DC converter. The desired output voltage can be easily adjusted over a wide range by simply changing the parameters of the PWM converter. The output voltage is pushed through the output filter to reduce AC ripple and ensure the required quality of the DC signal.

The CSS50054/I is designed such that it has an overall efficiency of typically 85-90% with very low power dissipation compared to other AC DC converters. It is also designed with a very low input current harmonic distortion, which makes it an ideal choice for multipoint systems. In addition, it also features a very low conducted and radiated EMI, making it suitable for use in video, audio and audiovisual applications.
