The CY3212-CAPSENSE is a very useful evaluation board which is designed to demonstrate the implementation of capacitive sensing application using the PSoC® 3 and PSoC 5LP. The board combines a 4-button Capacitive Touch user interface with a wide range of peripherals, allowing the user to evaluate and assess the capabilities of the PSoC devices using its capacitive sensing block. This application note will discuss the application field and working principle of the CY3212-CAPSENSE board.

Application Field of CY3212-CAPSENSE

The CY3212-CAPSENSE is useful in a variety of applications including industrial, automotive, and consumer products. The board uses the PSoC® 3 and PSoC 5LP family of devices which makes it easy for designers to develop, evaluate, and quickly bring the product to market. The capacitive sensing block makes it easy to implement minimum and maximum touch thresholds for applications with potentially harsh and noisy environments. Working Principle of CY3212-CAPSENSE

The CY3212-CAPSENSE board follows the flexibility of the PSoC 3 and PSoC 5LP family of devices in capacitive sensing. It can be configured to support a variety of sensing topologies including mutual-capacitance, self-capacitance, and proximity sensing applications. The board is equipped with a shield-drive circuit driven by an external shield generator in order to provide the capacitive touch sensing input signals to the device.

The touch sensing module on the board is configured for four-wire mutual-capacitance sensing. Each of the four buttons consists of two electrodes which form a mutual-capacitance with each other. The shield drive circuit is connected to the shield pins on the PSoC 3/5LP device to provide the necessary drive signals to control the amount of capacitance on the electrodes. The drive signal\'s frequency and amplitude can be adjusted via the shield generator.

The capacitive sensing module on the board is configured to directly connect to GPIO on the PSoC 3/5LP pins. The four buttons can then be mapped to different GPIO pins thus providing the user a convenient way to add additional buttons without requiring external components. The sensing module also provides hysteresis and noise rejection features that helps to achieve reliable sensing performance in noisy and harsh environments.
