Working Principle

This steadies small variations in the reverse bias and prevents the output from becoming too large.

The diode acts as a clamp and prevents any further increase in voltage across the diode. The operating voltage of the diode is dependent on it’s Zener voltage. Thus, a high Zener voltage enables the diode to be operated at a higher voltage, whereas a low Zener voltage enables the diode to be operated at a lower voltage.
