The CZRB3043-G is a single zener diode, a two-terminal, semiconductor device with a highly doped p-n junction designed to operate in a reverse-bias breakdown fashion. It is mainly used for voltage regulation, peak voltage clamping, and pulse/transient suppression.
Generally, when the applied voltage is lower than the breakdown voltage of the diode, very little current flows through it and the diode acts as an open circuit. When the applied voltage exceeds a certain value the diode starts to conduct current and the dynamic resistance drops, and the voltage drop across the diode remains nearly constant regardless of the changes of the applied voltage. This is the operating region and the value of the applied breakdown voltage being the zener voltage. In this region the CZRB3043-G behaves like a voltage regulator.
The CZRB3043-G is mainly used for dc and low frequency ac applications in consumer appliances, power supplies, and other devices. Its reverse-bias breakdown voltage is 3.0 V, with a maximum reverse current being 5 μA. The power dissipation is 2 W at 25°C and its operating temperature range is -55°C to 150°C.
To protect the device from too high power dissipation, the CZRB3043-G has built-in thermal protection. When the junction temperature exceeds the design temperature, excess heat is rapidly dissipated through a thermal path connected to the case. To further enhance the reliability, it is also highly stable, tested up to 10.000 cycles.
The working principle of the CZRB3043-G is based on the PN junction characteristics. As the applied reverse voltage exceeds a certain value, a small amount of current can flow through the PN junction in the reverse direction. This current is known as the leakage current. As the applied reverse voltage increases, the saturation current rapidly increases too, resulting in a nearly constant voltage drop across the diode.
