Diodes - Zener - Single

The CZRB3200-G is a single Zener diode, often used in voltage regulation, switching, and clamping. It is a general-purpose diode with an ultra-high power dissipation capability of 0.5W to 2.0W. It requires a 1A minimum current and can operate at reverse breakdown voltage of 2V to 200V. It\'s designed for use in power supplies, other power electronic, and battery-operated applications.

Application Field

Zener diodes like the CZRB3200-G are widely adopted for use in various applications. It is employed in power supplies and other power electronic applications such as:

  • Power Supply Regulation: A Zener diode can be placed in a voltage regulator circuit to regulate the output voltage at a particular level regardless of the input voltage. This is typically used to power sensitive electronic devices which require a consistent voltage to ensure their functionality.
  • Voltage Clamping: These devices are also used to protect circuits from overvoltage. By placing a Zener diode in the circuit, it will conduct current and clamp the voltage, when the input voltage exceeds the Zener voltage. Working Principle

The figure below shows the basic structure of the CZRB3200-G. This zener diode consists of a p-n junction, a cathode terminal and an anode terminal. The operation of the diode is based upon a unique behavior of a p-n junction diode known as “the Zener effect”. This effect explains the fact that when a reverse bias voltage is applied to the diode, there is a voltage drop across it because current suddenly starts to flow.

At reverse biasing, electrons from the p-type material will recombine with holes from the n-type material. As the reverse voltage increases, more and more of these electron-hole pairs will be created until there are just enough electrons at the junction to neutralise the field, allowing current to flow. The voltage at which this occurs is the Zener or breakdown voltage. This Zener voltage is a function of the materials forming the junction, the doping concentrations and the temperature. This zener voltage is the voltage at which the diode will begin to conduct in the reverse bias direction.

When the reverse voltage is applied, the depletion region created by holes and electrons will start to reduce significantly and when it reaches the pinch-off voltage, the diode becomes fully conductive. As the reverse voltage increases further, the current flowing through the diode increases linearly. When the applied voltage reaches the Zener voltage, the diode reaches a condition of maximum conductance. However, the current does not increase significantly beyond this voltage as the diode is already in the maximum current state. Thus, the great advantage of the Zener diode is that it allows the user to precisely maintain the output voltage within a certain value range.
