Reed Relays

Reed relays are a type of electric switch that opens and closes an electrical circuit by using an electromagnet to move a ferromagnetic element (the reed) back and forth. The reed is held in place in a vacuum-sealed glass envelope which helps protect it from external environmental factors such as vibration and electrical noise. The reed relay is usually the preferred choice for low power, high speed and/or high accuracy switching applications.The Dual-in-Series DBR72410P Reed Relay is a miniaturized, high-reliability, dual-reed version of the DBR72210P single-reed relay. This reed relay offers higher reliability and a longer contact life than a traditional solid state switch. It is designed for applications where high packing density, reliability and safety are of importance.The design of the DBR72410P uses a special double-pivot mechanism to ensure positive contact pressure in both in the relay’s open and closed states. This ensures a reliable, low-resistance connection over long life. The contact blade tip ensures minimum contact voltages are met even in the presence of a high ElectroMagnetic Interference (EMI) environment. This reed relay is ideal for a broad range of applications, such as HVAC control systems, automotive, instrumentation systems, and test & measurement tasks.The DBR72410P reed relay features an enhanced contacts-life performance (in excess of one million operations), a deep vacuum-sealed integrated structure offering excellent humidity resistance and low-voltage resistance, and its low profile (17.7-mm x7.1-mm x4.8-mm) allows it to be used in limited space packages. Additionally, the reed relay is EMI resistant with its enhanced contact blade and special design which provides additional shielding from external noise in the electronic circuit. The DBR72410P is designed to operate at a nominal coil voltage of 6 Volts with an operating current of 20 mA and a power dissipation of 120 mW. When operated at its nominal conditions, this reed relay is capable of switching both ac or dc currents up to 5 Amps with a maximum contact resistance of 40 milliohms. It is also capable of switching 12V or 24V dc up to 2 Amps with a contact resistance of 40 milliohms.The working principle of the DBR72410P reed relay is simple and quite ingenious. It uses an electromagnetic coil to generate a magnetic field that pulls the movable reed contact open or closed. When electricity is passed through the coil, a magnetic field is produced which attracts the contact which then closes the switch. When the electricity is removed, the magnetic field decreases and the contact opens.In conclusion, the DBR72410P reed relay is a highly reliable, low power, miniaturized switch with a long contact life and a deep vacuum-sealed structure ensuring excellent resistance to humidity and to external environmental factors.
