DC1449A evaluation board is a type of AC/DC (off-line) switch mode power supply (SMPS), which is designed to evaluate Linear Technology’s synchronous DC/DC, PWM and PFC controllers. It helps engineers to rapidly design, prototype, and evaluate a wide range of DC/DC, PWM and PFC applications and comprises a synchronous DC/DC controller, a boost PFC controller, a buck PWM controller, a buck converter stage, a two-phase active-clamp forward pre-regulator stage and additional components. Engineers can mix and match the discrete components to evaluate the performance of their design. This makes DC1449A suitable for such applications as multi-output power supplies, VRMs for notebooks, game consoles, set-top boxes, external HDD support, etc. Furthermore, a wide range of input voltages are supported to design five-volt, 12-volt, 25-volt, or higher different output voltages. For this evaluation board, certain limitations are set by the controller ICs such as input voltage range from 73 to 100 Vac, output voltage range from 0.85 to +100 Vdc, and output power up to 600 watts.
The evaluation board features a single-stage boost PFC (power factor correction) controller, a two-phase active-clamp forward pre-regulator, a symmetrical buck converter stage, and either the LTC3786/3787 dual-output synchronous controller or LTM4624 triple output controller. A complete PFC+CV/CC+Volt Controller+Power Goods Board on a single board solution supports high power density applications. Each stage includes a variety of second-order compensation options for optimization according to the application’s different requirements, performed through digital control parameters adjustment with the evaluation board’s on-board thumbwheel potentiometer.
The DC1449A board operates at a switching frequency of 250 kHz. It provides several features for better performance and reliability of the design such as under-voltage lockout (UVLO) for both input and output, current-limit protection for the PFC and secondary stages, overtemperature protection, and fault conditions indicated with two sets of LEDs. The board also includes a transformer and non-isolated regulator circuits with other necessary components.
For the implementation of the DC1449A, some information about the external components and measurements should be checked to ensure that the evaluation board is working correctly. This includes the input line voltage (110/115/220/230 Vac), output voltage, output power and load current.
