DC1483A is a type of evaluation board which allows a user to evaluate and demonstrate the power performance of a number of power management integrated circuits. This board has been designed for use with an external line-in power source and can be used to evaluate DC/DC power factor corrected Flyback, forward, and buck/boost off-line converters. The DC1483A board features a two- in-one wide switching frequency voltage mode control technology IC, the NCP1203, which is capable of operation over a wide input voltage range as well as with either an isolated or non-isolated converter output. The excellent switching frequency flexibility, wide input voltage and low current consumption capabilities make the DC1483A a great tool for testing power management circuitry.
The DC1483A features two integrated systems; the voltage mode control with the NCP1203 and a separate resistor-programmable power supply. The voltage mode control allows the user to adjust the switching frequency up to 500kHz or down to 10kHz in order to maximize the efficiency or minimize the output ripple. The resistor-programmable power supply allows the user to select a specific voltage output in order to operate the converter with a fixed voltage output.
The DC1483A also features many other useful features such as a DC fan, polarity protection, and an active current-source drive stage. The fan helps to prevent thermal runaway during operation. The polarity protection prevents any potential damage to the board by reversing the input voltage. The active current-source drive stage is an integrated feature of the board that reduces the number of external components required for stable operation of the converter.
The DC1483A also has a microcontroller (MCU) which is connected to the NCP1203 regulator in order to provide protection against short-circuit overloads and soft start up/down control. The MCU also acts as a data logger for the DC1483A by logging all the parameters of the converter. The data is stored in a non-volatile memory and can be viewed directly on the PC via a serial port.
The DC1483A when used in conjunction with an off-line AC/DC switch mode power supply (SMPS) is also able to carry out a number of other functions such as sensor conditioning & power factor correction, voltage conversion, voltage transformation, line-regulating, active current limiting & power-scaling and frequency conversion.
Overall, the DC1483A is a highly versatile and user-friendly piece of off-line power management equipment. It can be used to evaluate DC/DC power factor corrected Flyback, forward, and buck/boost off-line converters. Its advanced features such as polarity protection, active current-source drive stage, voltage mode control and resistor-programmable power supply make it a great tool for testing power management circuitry. The MCU gives the added functionality of data logging and monitoring of the DC1483A’s various parameters.
