The DC1860B Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS is a practical, economical platform for designers to investigate product designs based on the popular switcher IC technologies of the various switching topologies. It is designed to allow designers to quickly evaluate their designs and provide an easy way to debug them when necessary.
The DC1860B board provides a sample application field that covers a broad range of typical power supply requirements of various consumer electronic devices such as TVs, DVD players, digital cameras and many others. It also offers a convenient way to evaluate a non-standard application, and provides a great opportunity to explore and understand the behavior and performance of different SMPS designs.
The board is based on the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology, which allows it to support switching frequencies up to 300 kHz. This provides improved flexibility in adapting the board’s operation to changing loads and environmental conditions. To enable designers to gain an intimate understanding of the device and how it reacts to various load conditions, the DC1860B features an intuitive LED display which allows designers to track the operation of the board and its components.
Working principle is as follows: the DC1860B board consists of three key components; a synchronous buck regulator (aka switcher IC), a voltage reference and a control portion. The switcher IC outputs a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) waveform. The switcher IC drives the main output either directly or through an inductor, depending on the design configurability option that is chosen. The voltage reference is used to control the switching frequency of the PWM output. The control portion includes an external signal conditioning circuit, used to detect the load variations and adjust the PWM duty cycle, as well as an external current sense resistor, used to monitor the output current and ensure the design operates within its specified power rating. The LED output gives a visual indication of the operation of the board.
The DC1860B board is capable of producing regulated output voltages from 1.2 to 20V. The board is designed to accept a wide range of input voltages, from 120V to 240V AC and from 12V to 24V DC. The current rating can be programmed up to the power dissipation limit of the board. The board also has a built-in thermal shutdown feature that protects it from damage due to excessive power dissipation.
