DC1891A is a high efficiency, digitally controlled, AC/DC off-line SMPS evaluation board, consisting of a single stage buck converter and controller which has been custom designed optimized for great power density and high efficiency.

This evaluation board provides an optimal performance in AC/DC conversion by using digital control to minimize losses and maximize efficiency. The board is comprised of a full-bridge AC/DC boost converter, combined with a buck regulator with a digital controller, output voltage and output current sense. The integration of the two converters on the same board saves the user space and simplifies the design, while the digital control of the integrated switcher allows for compensation and accurate regulation.

DC1891A offers flawless operability by regulating the output voltage and current at specified ranges, with a maximum output current of 10 amps. The user can also set the power converter’s parameters either by entering a recommended set point via the switches of the board or by using an external interface. The evaluation board outputs a programmable DC voltage from 3.3V to 30V, and has an operating frequency of 35 kHz.

The operating principle of the DC1891A is simple and straightforward. When the AC input voltage reaches the preset threshold, the switching FETs are activated to start the conversion process. The peak current mode control regulates the average switching current to a fixed current, and the peak current is limited by the input voltage and the duty cycle of the converter. Once the current reaches the set peak, the converter cycles off at the preset frequency and begins the conduction of the diode bridge. The energy within the inductor then flows through the diode bridge to the output, generating a DC output voltage.

The DC1891A allows for high efficiency operation with low ripple and noise. The extremely low output voltage ripple is achieved by using an average current model combined with dynamic peak current control of the FETs. The board also utilizes an upper and lower current limit set-point to protect the circuitry from overcurrent damage. The user can adjust the limit set-points to tailor the board to the desired application.

Overall, the DC1891A is an excellent evaluation platform for high efficiency AC/DC off-line operation. Its combination of digital control and low ripple operation makes it an ideal solution for a variety of applications, from telecom and power systems to solar and LED lighting applications.
