Evaluation boards, and more specifically those of the DC/DC and AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS variety, are designed with the purpose of testing and analyzing the functionality of Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). DC1872A is an example of one such SMPS evaluation board which couples the efficiency of an offline converter with the full line and load regulation of a dc-dc converter.
At the heart of the DC1872A\'s design is the Infineon ICE3PCS01 single-stage flyback PWM controller IC with built-in 650V-rated CoolMOS™ C7 MOSFET, optimized for high performance, fast transient response, low standby and no-load power loss. This device also integrates protection and diagnostic features such as a single power on/off control pin, single feedback pin, thermal overload protection and undervoltage lockouts that guard from failure by shutting down operation. This IC drives the external PWM controller IC to regulate the output voltage from 0.95V to 24V with a maximum load of 6A.
The DC1872A, however, does more than just regulate the output voltage; it also provides fast transient response capabilities and low standby power loss. The board includes an opto-coupler connected to the PWM controller to set the frequency, as well as one power switch, two output terminals, a fault signal and a power-good signal. The two output terminals are also linked to a pre-designed small-value output filter capacitor for enhanced line regulation.
The board is designed upon a multilayer PCB built using reinforced material and covered with heatsink to dissipate heat generated during operation. The input of the board is from the rectified and filtered input power supply and is regulated using single ended feedback. The output voltage can be adjusted with the help of a potentiometer, which allows the output synchronization to a vast range of modulation frequencies and duty cycles.
Featuring an in-built test point and through-hole diagnostic, the DC1872A is an excellent choice for laboratory experimental purposes as it provides a real and practical environment to study and improve power supply performance. The Evaluation Board also includes a highly visible LED that indicates any possible errors with the power supply operation, such as an output overvoltage.
