Working Principle

The working principle of DDZ33BSF-7 is that it operates on the Zener diode breakdown effect, which is mainly produced by the built-in junction of p-n diode. Usually, the diode can operate as a forward bias diode, which allows current to flow in one direction but not the other. However, when a certain voltage is exceeded and the reverse-bias current reaches a certain value, a sharp reduction in current occurs. This phenomenon is known as Zener breakdown, and it is the use of this breakdown which DDZ33BSF-7 utilizes.

As the applied reverse-bias voltage increases, electrons move from the n-side conduction band to the valence band and then to the p-side conduction band, forming "holes" in the n-side conduction band. At the same time, holes move to the conduction band and then to the p-side conduction band, creating an additional pathway for current to pass through. This additional pathway enables a high leakage current to flow in the opposite direction, which is known as "Zener current". As a result, the Zener diode limits the reverse-bias voltage to the specified breakdown voltage.
