DDZ9V1CQ-7 is a popular diode of the Zener diode family. Zener diodes are mainly used for their ability to maintain a constant reverse voltage across the diode regardless of any changes in the devices current. This particular model is a single diode capable of blocking current in both directions and withstanding up to 9 Volts of reverse voltage.

The Zener diode or "avalanche diode" works by using a reverse breakdown voltage effect by which the extremely high electric fields can be created at the p-n junction, which in turn allows current to pass through the device. During normal operation, the p-n junction in the diode is maintained in reverse bias. In this arrangement, the electric field built up at the reverse-biased contact junction is the main factor causing current to flow through the diode in a reverse mode.

Once the reverse voltage exceeds the Zener breakdown voltage (which is achieved by gradually increasing the reverse bias), current starts to flow through the diode. In this breakdown mode, it is said that the electric fields created at the junction become so strong that they cause some electrons to become "truly free" or "emitted" into the semiconductor material. This process is known as electron avalanche and is the main phenomenon used by diodes to regulate the voltage present across their junction. These electrons then drift away and allow for current to flow. As the current increases, the amount of dissipated power increases as well.
