TVS diodes, otherwise referred to as transient voltage suppressors, are voltage stabilizing mechanisms used to protect against electrical overvoltage or over-current situations. This wide range of protection devices allow circuit designers to prevent various power system failures. DF6F6.8MCTC (TE85L) is a TVS diode used primarily for ESD and surge protection in applications such as personal computers and mobile phones.

DF6F6.8MCTC (TE85L) is a Dual Common Anode Bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode with a Uni-Directional configuration with an operating voltage range of 6.8V. It is a fixed voltage device with ESD Protection (i.e. Electrostatic Discharge) capability. It has a high voltage standoff ratio and fast response time. The maximum repetitive peak pulse reverse voltage is +60 V. It is a hermetically sealed device with UL94V-0-rated flame retardant epoxy encapsulated construction.

The TE85L diode features a ceramic body and a palladium-plated anode terminal. The ceramic body provides improved thermal performance over conventional plastic packages and the palladium-plated anode terminal is designed to offer superior corrosion resistance and low electrical resistivity at higher contact forces. It is designed to absorb and dissipate up to 2 kA, 10/1000 μs of ESD and surge current.

The working principle of DF6F6.8MCTC (TE85L) is the same as other standard TVS diodes. It is a nonlinear voltage device which senses a voltage exceeding its breakdown voltage and clips the voltage at its Zener voltage. It also acts as a current regulator to reduce the surge current to less than its steady state maximum limit. The devices work by clamping the voltage across it to a predetermined value. When an overvoltage condition is applied, the device will clamp the voltage to its Zener voltage. The device will not allow current to pass through until its Zener voltage is exceeded. Once the voltage across the diode is greater than its breakdown voltage, the diode passes current through it. As the voltage across the diode approaches the Zener voltage, the current passing through the diode decreases.

The TE85L is most commonly used for ESD and lightning protection in applications such as medical devices, avionics, communications systems, consumer electronics, and automotive systems. Its small size makes it ideal for high-density applications. The device is also designed to be RoHS compliant with no Halogen or PBDEs, and it is available in EIAJ or JEDEC-approved packages.
